I loved this book and was deeply touched by the stories in it and by the honesty different people shared in sharing their deeply personal stories about depression. And after I just finished my hard copy this morning, I just went and bought the Kindle version which was free do you do some Kindle credits I had, so does that tell you how much I like the book that I wanted to have a digital copy as well? I know I'm going to want to share bits and pieces in an appropriate manner with friends, and that's why I wanted to get that digital copy, so I could screenshot a call or page or two here and there to share as needed. :-) I was especially surprised to learn of Sister Johnson's struggles with depression, I appreciate her sincere sharing of her heart and soul in this book and I appreciate that she was able to write such a profound book to help us due to her struggles and challenges. Be warned, this is a deeply intense book, due to the nature of the subject. I will definitely be back to add to my review, but I just finished the book this morning, and I didn't want to go on with my day without adding a review about what profound and necessary read this book is! If I could, I would give it a million stars! I think the point of this book is, once you read it, to move forward in life with that are compassion and empathy for those who struggle with depression. It is a call to action to be better in serving a ministering to those who struggle with depression and their families and friends! Well this book will be most easily understood by those who are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since there is a strong emphasis, friends of this church will definitely benefit as well as counselors another faiths who might be wanting to understand their LDS clients. And even if one does not have a face, the topical Rosa night and be helpful, just know that if you are not a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, it does have that emphasis. She does a fantastic job of sharing beautiful scriptures and quotes from General Authorities as well as mingling with quotes from reputable secular sources. All of this is mingled with the sharing of a variety of personal experiences and stories that people shared with her as She interviewed folks for her book. This book is comprehensive and including sections on dealing and supporting those who struggle with perfectionism, missionaries who struggle, women who struggle with postpartum depression, those who struggle with suicide, youth who struggle. I was completely impressed with the quality of the personal sharing that was shared, some of these people on their family shared such tremendous insight, thank you to each of the contributors and their families! My heart did hurt for some who struggles did not receive appropriate support, such as a missionary who questioned what things would have been like had she had better support on her mission! And my heart smiled when she shared some comments describing a positive approach by the positive ministering example of other missionary presidents, including the New York New York South Mission president, a true minister of Jesus Christ who I know personally as a former Ward and stake member! I myself have been in counseling for a couple of years due to some depression related to my age of being single and not having children, and I've had several bouts here and there throughout my life with depression. So in sharing this, my one wish for this book would have been to have a chapter that gives suggestions for members of the church to be better at supporting those who are single and who do not have children, to understand that some of us might have a deep depression due to these type of challenges, but sometimes people don't recognize it. For instance I know from those who struggle with infertility, there could be deep depression as well! Of course I realize a book cannot include everything! Finally I love the idea shared in the book about a stake in New Hampshire who started a special bonus committee in there safe, what a wonderful idea for other Stakes to try to incorporate, and I'm going to share that idea with the self-reliance specialist in my ward and probably with our stake president as well so that they can consider this idea on some level!

So many people struggle not just from mental illness but the feeling of isolation that can come with it. This book is a gift of validation and hope. The overarching message from the author is clear: you are not alone. It is filled with real stories (one of them shared by my own spouse) of people who fight inner demons and of those who support and love them. It is worth reading. I agree wholeheartedly with the author that "healing for those who suffer from depression begins when we listen to these stories, when we encourage those who tell them to speak out about their pain and share their vulnerability. It comes, too, when we are willing to be vulnerable along with them..."

This book was wonderful and so candid about the real experiences of women struggling with depression. It is healing to know we are not alone. I am motivated to share my story with others now, too, because I know how much hearing about other people has helped me heal.

As I finish this book, I AM weeping, and not silently. This is probably the most tender, professional, beautiful book I have ever read on the topic of anxiety and depression. And I have read volumes, both for my profession as an RN and as a mother and grandmother who has wept for those in my family who have carried this heavy burden.Jane's professionalism as a journalist and interviewer is so evident, but coupled with her personal journey and her faith, this is her best work, in my opinion.Somewhere in this book, you will see yourself, either as one who suffers with this disease, someone who has wished they could help someone who suffers, or someone who has judged others wrongly. Wherever you are, you will find ways to find hope and healing for yourself and others. Together, through compassion and understanding, we can rescue suffering souls and save lives. Thank you, Jane for this inspired work.

A MUST READ for everyone who struggles with mental illness or loves someone who struggles. I wish more people would read this and be open about their struggles. This is a very powerful and brave look into the darkness that only someone as talented as Jane could do so gracefully. As one who has struggled and watched others struggle, this book helped me with my own story as well as brought some much needed healing to my latest battle for my “brain health”. Thank you Jane for shining a light into the darkness!

Amazing book! I have heard so many people talking about how great this book is and now I know why. This book doesn’t just address those suffering with depression, it has valuable insights for everyone! I am particularly impressed with how well Jane offers an accurate, understanding of depression, what the professionals know about the disease, and the various ways it can manifest and be addressed. It was so interesting to see how many notable leaders, familiar names and well-known members of the church have struggled with depression at one time or another in their life. Jane’s presentation of their challenges and their triumphs was inspiring. It’s a blessing to have someone with Jane’s professional expertise present useful information, insights and perspectives, and plausible remedies in a well-organized, easy to read, format. Jane beautifully removes the unfortunate and undeserved shame often associated with depression. She ignites hope. She helps us feel the importance of candid discussion. She generates optimism. I had a hard time putting the book down! I will read this book over and over and share it with many people. It’s a must read!!!

This book is a game changer in recognizing and dealing with mental illness for those suffering with it and for the care givers to those suffering. It is a must read if you or someone you know is suffering with any kind of depression or anxiety.
