I have been following Jason's blog Rejected Princesses for a long time and am absolutely thrilled with the book. I especially like that it is separated by maturity so that I have a good idea before reading it if it will be appropriate for my 7 year old daughter (yes I read them first before she will but it's nice to have a guide).

This book is AMAZING!Honestly I had no expectations. First I came across the writers IG account. The idea of forgotten women was enough for me to follow him. Then it became apparent this was a book he was working on; so I became intrigued. When I saw that you could pre-order it sounded like a good idea. So I did. This book is big and heavy. The information is expansive and easy to follow. There are art comments explaining the illustration choices. I was blown away to say the least. It is so exciting to get a good book. And this was more than that for me. This is a book that will bring on many conversations for my children and I. This is a book that I have always needed and didn't know it. It's beautiful. Yes some of the stories are... well they are factual. There is a rating system to help incase you are worried about appropriateness. History isn't always pretty and it's best not to pretend it is.Currently I have to hide to read it as it is an Xmas present for the children and I cannot wait to share it with them... and maybe I won't. Did I mention how excited I am!?

This book is awesome in so many ways.1) topic - the book explores the real history of women who conquered nations, saved countries, broke barriers, and were in fact real life princesses or queens or handmaidens who are barely if ever mentioned in our school's history books!2) writing style - well written using factual information but so almost any reading age can pick it up and get immersed in the flow3) guide indicators - this book is cleverly written from the most child friendly tale to the least with extremely clear color coded marks to help kids and parents easily identify what stories are suitable for what age range. There are also clear indicators on what stories contain with reference to Violence, Assault, Rape, self-harm and Sex to help further guide or limit reading for the reader. I love this guide and wish every book had it!4) display - there are beautiful illustrations representing each of the characters in their roles. Clear and matter of fact and full of relevant details.5) The book was clearly written with love - and by a man who sees the inequalities around him and recognized that he could use his talents to help balance out some of them.Suitable for all ages with guidance thanks to the reference guide. My 6 year old is enjoying the "green" stories by herself and being inspired whilst I can share a more select amount from the more mature stories.

I bought this for my nieces after hearing the author on an NPR game show - bought it right after the show from my smartphone in one of those NPR driveway moments. They LOVE it. Like so many kids their age, it's hard to compete with their smartphones for attention, but this book succeeds. They argue over whose turn it is with the book when it's reading-actual-books time these summer afternoons. I thought about getting a second copy but only having one seems to make them even more keen to get their hands on it, and it's great to see them looking forward to a book. Personally, I don't use any of the restriction or trigger warning codes. They can read whatever they want to read - yes, there is mention of violence and lovers and some sexuality, but they're going to see and hear about that in the media and cultural osmosis anyway, they're not Amish - and I'm glad they're getting introduced to those themes through tales of heroic awesome women who took control of their destinies. There's nothing in this that I'd think inappropriate for children their age (but I grew up on real fairy tales, not the pasteurized kind).

One of the things I enjoy about Tumblr is that you never know what surprising new thing will cross your path. One day on my dash, amid all the posts about incarnations of Sherlock Holmes, people being thrilled by Yuri on Ice (it’s charming; I loved it) and The Science Side of Tumblr, a post about Jason Porath’s Rejected Princesses artwork came past putting some vapour-brain who claimed no woman of colour ever invented a thing or amounted to much.Following the links I discovered that Jason Porath had once worked as an animator for Dreamworks. The idea for his series of the women of history and legend who deserve to be better known came from Jason and his fellow animators discussing the questions: Who is the least likely candidate for an animated princess movie? (Hence the ‘Rejected’ in front of ‘Princesses’ in the title.)Porath kept suggesting women he’d learned about that the rest of the crew had never heard of. “I thought that should change,” he says in the forward. The result is a book of nearly 100 women of history and legend (some smudging that line) who were powerful, cunning, determined, inventive, deadly, ambitious, righteous, and altogether superbly badass. Each entry is illustrated with a portrait in an animated-princess style, though the subject matter isn’t necessarily Disneyesque. Each is coded with markers to note how graphic the content will be, from a nice good defeats evil green to warning for violence, abuse, rape and self harm, so that readers can better choose what to share with their kids.Sounds grim at times, but Porath has a flair for storytelling and a sassy wit, in the footnotes as well as the text. His breeziness doesn’t ignore the more troubling parts of these women’s fates (or sometimes very stabby behaviour). They’re not all good women, but they are women of note who should be better known.Of course, some of them are well known to me, like Ada Lovelace and (thanks to Netflix’s Marco Polo series) Khutulan, but most were new to me.One reviewer questioned the historical accuracy of some entries, but Porath provides a bibliography and I look forward to investigating more about these women, now I know who they are.I read my copy on my Kindle app on the iPad so I could better enjoy the colourful art.
