Even after periods of hostility, such as these, the “pursuit of the Great Harmony” between the USA and China resumed.I approached this book being somewhat knowledgeable on these points. My father, a foreign policy buff who had campaigned for President Nixon, taught me the nuances of American and Chinese relations during the time of Nixon’s great overture to China in the 1970s. Even so, this book provided a depth of knowledge about the interactions between Americans and Chinese that I was not aware of.The book is objective, without ideological axes to grind. It explodes myths, such as that the Chinese Communists bore the lion’s share of fighting against the Japanese in WWII, while the Chinese Nationalists under Chiang Kai-shek were corrupt slackers. This was a myth that my father, a China buff, taught me. Pomfret says the reality is that the Chinese Nationalists did most of the fighting, thereby wearing themselves down to the point where Mao’s Communist could take over the country.Pomfret advises us to be objective in furthering our own best interests as our relationship with China continues to deepen: “In the pursuit of the Great Harmony, rapturous enchantment is not America’s ally; realism is.” At the moment, that means constraining China’s ambitions to extend its territory far out into the Pacific, thereby encroaching on our allies’ claims to islands and control of the sea lanes. It means coming to terms with our trade with China, which results in $367 billion trade deficits each year.Americans who want to thoroughly understand our relations with China during our 240 years as a nation will be educated by this book. China has always shaped our history --- mostly in positive ways, but also by the inevitable rivalries of two great powers. We may be nearing some choppy waters in our relations with China, in trade and territorial disputes in the Western Pacific. This book has arrived at an opportune time to help us understand how to negotiate with China to get through the choppy seas together.

Some Americans seem to have the impression that the U.S. relationship with China began in 1972 when Richard Nixon flew to Beijing. In The Beautiful Country and the Middle Kingdom, journalist and long-time Beijing resident John Pomfret puts this mistaken impression decisively to rest. In truth, the destinies of the two countries have been closely linked for more than a century—and began when the U.S. shed its identity as a British colony in 1776. As Pomfret writes, “America’s first fortunes were made in the China trade from 1783 until the early 1800s.” And American missionaries began arriving in the 1830s.The world’s wealthiest nationFew Americans are aware that in 1800 China was the world’s wealthiest nation. Its factories produced one-third of all the world’s goods. The world’s wealthiest businessman was a Chinese trader. And a single Chinese city—Guangzhou (formerly Canton)—harbored a population of one million people. That was the equivalent of one-fourth of the U.S. population. Though China’s relative position in the world economy declined rapidly in the course of the 19th century, the country still loomed large in the eyes of American business and represented the number one target of the fast-growing evangelistic faiths that dominated religion in the U.S.The central importance of bilateral tradePomfret surveys the two-and-a-half centuries that have elapsed since English-turned-American traders first visited China. In fact, trade between the U.S. and China is one of the dominant themes of that history. Many great American fortunes were built on the opium trade, which dominated bilateral commerce throughout the 19th century. In more recent years, beginning in earnest in the 1980s in the wake of Deng Xiao-Peng’s economic reforms, trade has loomed large in the economies of both countries. Today, of course, the U.S. exports more than $100 billion annually to China—and imports $400 billion. “America has been China’s top trading partner since the 1990s,” Pomfret writes. “China surpassed Canada to become America’s top partner in 2015.”Missionaries and education in U.S.-China relationsTwo other themes emerge clearly in The Beautiful Country and the Middle Kingdom: the disproportionately large role played by American Protestant missionaries, and the importance of U.S. influence both in building China’s educational system and in educating millions of Chinese in American universities. As Pomfret writes, “During the heyday of American missionary activity from the late nineteenth through the early twentieth century, Americans funded a majority of China’s colleges and high schools and scores of . . . YMCA and YWCA centers as well as agricultural extensions, charities, and research institutes.” Even today, privileged young Chinese commonly seek out higher education in the U.S. Pomfret: “From Deng Xiaoping on, every Communist leader has sent at least one of his children to the US to study, including the Harvard-educated daughter of the current president, Xi Jinping.”Throughout most of the 20th century, American-educated Chinese played outsized roles in their country’s history. In the closing years of the 19th century and the first several decades of the 20th, most of those who attended American colleges and universities were Protestants. The range of their studies was as broad as that of American students. In more recent decades, a large proportion of Chinese students in the United States have obtained degrees in science and engineering. As a result, they have helped China attain ever-growing prominence in the sciences. And those who have chosen to remain in the U.S. have played a role in building the American high-tech sector far out of proportion to their share of the population.An intimate relationship despite outward hostilityPomfret emphasizes that the current hostility between the U.S. and China is largely a recent phenomenon. Until the People’s Republic of China was founded in 1949, the U.S. was generally held in high regard in China despite episodes such as the Boxer Rebellion of 1899-1901 when American troops invaded China. While Britain, Germany, France, Russia, and Japan repeatedly carved out portions of Chinese cities where their own laws applied, the anti-colonial U.S. rarely collaborated. This helped Americans gain a reputation as friendy and respectful by comparison. American support for Chiang Kai-Shek’s Nationalist government, the U.S. role in the Korean War, and the Communist Chinese government’s need to elevate a single foreign enemy as a scapegoat were principally responsible for souring the relationship. Outwardly, the two countries have been hostile in recent decades. However, in reality, the relationship in recent years has been more intimate than ever.The high regard in which most Chinese held Americans was not reciprocated. America’s attitude toward China and the Chinese was dominated by racism throughout much of the last two-and-a-half centuries. It’s well known that immigrant Chinese laborers played a major role in building the transcontinental railroad, less widely recognized that the same was true of the Western mining industry. Yet, as Pomfret notes, the passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882 to combat the so-called Yellow Peril “resulted in an epidemic of mass roundups, expulsions, arson, and murder that spread from California to Colorado, from Washington state to the South. The scattered violence of the 1870s turned into a systematic purge.” The law was not repealed until 1943. “The vast federal bureaucracy designed to limit immigration to America,” Pomfret explains, “was originally created not in response to Mexicans [and now Muslims], but to the Chinese.”A lively account of U.S.-China relationsPomfret’s account of U.S.-China relations is lively. Working chronologically, he paints sketchy portraits of many of the fascinating characters who have dominated this still unfolding drama. All the familiar names are there, of course—from the Dowager Empress Cixi, Sun Yat-Sen, and Mao Tse-Tung to Pearl Buck, John Dewey, and Richard Nixon—but most of the people who played major roles are unfamiliar to American readers. There are a lot of them: The Beautiful Country and the Middle Kingdom consists of 700 pages of densely written text.There are many surprises in the book. For me, the biggest of these was the revelation that, contrary to generally accepted scholarly opinion, the Chinese resistance to the Japanese was not led by Mao’s Communists but by the Nationalist forces of Chiang Kai-Shek. The Red Army rarely engaged the Japanese, while the Nationalists lost hundreds of thousands of troops doing so. Another surprise was to learn that Barbara Tuchman’s laudatory biography of U.S. General Joseph (“Vinegar Joe”) Stillwell was based in large part on misinformation. Pomfret documents the general’s repeated strategic and tactical errors in “advising” Chiang Kai-Shek. Pomfret concludes that “Tuchman’s Pulitzer Prize–winning work on Joseph Stilwell was magisterial but deeply unfair.”The title of The Beautiful Country and the Middle Kingdom reflects the English translation of the names by which the two countries are sometimes rendered in Mandarin. “The Beautiful Country,” of course, refers to the United States, as it was regarded by many Chinese visitors beginning in the 19th century.About the authorJohn Pomfret speaks, reads, and writes Mandarin as well as several European languages. In an Afterword, he writes “As a reporter for the Associated Press, I was tossed out of China in 1989 following the June Fourth massacre. The government accused me of being one of the ‘black hands’ behind the protests. I was happy with my book. The book provided captivating images of various scenes of the Big Apple during each season in a typical year. It's a must-have item for anyone who wants to see the happenings in New York City year round. I don't get a chance to visit the Big Apple often (only been there once). Every time I look through Ziga's The Seasons of New York, it feels like I am there with the people. AWESOME!!!

I especially love this book because of its size. Unlike most coffee table books that are too large to comfortably sit and read, this beautiful book can be easily enjoyed. The pictures are breathtaking and there is very little narrative (a plus!). The idea of showing the city in "seasons" is quite unique. I want to find more books by this author, but I will always cherish this book since I love New York! It would be a fabulous gift for an aspiring traveler. And the modest price seals the deal.

This book is beautiful and a great conversational piece. I used it to gift a trip to nyc for Christmas. I like it because at the end of each section it tells where the pictures are from and what they are.

I love good photos of New York City, and this book is full of them. I love that the photos show off the beauty of the city in each of the very distinct seasons. I keep it on my coffee table here in Seattle and look through it whenever I feel myself missing the sights and sounds of Manhattan, minus the horn honking, that is!

I just visited NYC for the first time in fall 2015 and hope it won't the last. I was hoping to find a picture book just like this one; one that would reinforce what I was able to see in a short time and otherwise provide a concise overview. What better way to present NYC than through the four seasons! The photos are splendid, and the book is just the right size. I highly recommend it.

This book is outside of my usual genre, but I have been discussing magic systems with my son and liked the cover and premise of this story, so I tried it.I liked it quite a lot. The MC is terrificly done. Sidebar: I don’t understand when reviewers say they didn’t like a book because the MC was not a nice person. Why should all MCs be nice people? The point is that she develops in the course of the story and this is nicely done. Yeah she’s unfeeling and brutal - so? That is the point of her character. She has had an extremely horrific upbringing and protecting her sister was the only goal for this first part of her life.The characters were all well-drawn. Jack was an especially compelling character to me. Meroe was very good and I loved her determination to reach “The Moron.”The magic system was logical and I liked the way the system was explained subtly. It’s a suitably “hard” system and there were no instances (that I caught) in which someone suddenly has inexplicable abilities. The concept of “Wells” and the variations on how powerfully someone can access a well held the story together with great logic. I liked that the Wells did not follow some ho-hum heard-it-all-before pattern; i.e. Well of Air! Well of Earth! Well of Fire... My only qualm, if I have one, about the use of magic might be that, in the climax of the story, so few people on a ship full of mage-born, seem to have adept command of one or multiple Wells. Sometimes this takes on a Hero-shines-too-brightly feel. Oh! It also seemed strange to me that Well of Ghul should be so spurned. It’s clearly useful and the MC claims to have sought ought a ghulwitch in order to never have consequences from all the sex she would be having. The abomination of being Ghul adept continued to ring false for me throughout; it felt like the author was saying, “Don’t forget! Being Ghul is VERY, VERY BAD!”The word craft was terrific, I thought, but I do think we could surely come up with an ocassional alternative word for “rot” and “rut.” I had other problems with “rut,” though, which I’ll outline in a minute. I did not particularly like generalizing “crabs” to mean monsters. It made it harder to picture the beasts and I could only think of crabs and in one instance, a hammerhead shark.The world building was good, though I sometimes had my doubts about a ship of the size described. Sometimes all the talk about pillars and towers and bridges with rusted-out gashes just blurred in my head into a Star-Wars-ish pile of metalics. I could picture the grey energy, though. I thought that element was well done.So, here we go; the one part that bugged me and I could not get behind was the sexuality and the emphasis on variant sexual expression. Call me a prude, but I thought it did nothing for the story and felt publisher-forced. To me this part makes this not YA, except maybe for the oldest teens. I would otherwise have shared this story with my 14yo, but not with all the sexuality.I liked that the story was not completely resolved, yet it didn’t end with a horrible cliff-hanger, either. I really hate those. I am eager to read the sequel.One thing I wished had been present: I wish Isoko would have determined to keep track of time in the beginning - say, she nicks a staff every day or something. This would help the reader feel the time pressure and it would also be a way to keep revisiting the original purpose of the quest, which is a point that easily leaves the reader’s mind while other plot points go on.All in all, this book is a yes for me, though not for the younger readers of YA.

Django Wexler's debut into the YA genre is a thrilling and engaging roller coaster ride. Let me say first that thought this is a YA novel it does deal with topics of rape and sexual activities but nothing to extreme.I personally have really nothing bad to say about this first entry in the Wells of Sorcery trilogy. It was everything I expect from Django Wexler. It has a very unique magic system called Wells. What I loved about this magic system was that it didn't focus on elements, not that there is anything wrong with that but it's what we have come to expect. Some of the Wells included Combat, Force, Perception, Shadows, etc. You also aren't limited to just one Well access but it's very rare to have access to two. There is a lot more detail to this magic system and it's something I want readers to read and digest it for themselves.The story is action, action, action. There was never ever a dull moment in this high octane story. This is a Ghost Ship Heist full of mystery and intrigue. I am so into a well plotted Heist and that was this.Django Wexler created and crafted a colorful cast of characters. Isoka is a powerful and confident protagonist and I was rooting for her every flip of the page. Isoka just joined my ranks of favorites. We also have some wonderful side characters. Meroe, Jack, and Thora are wonderful. They are quite a few others. We also have LGBTQ representation throughout this book from F/F to M/M.This is all I have to say about this first entry into the Wells of Sorcery Trilogy. Congratulations Django Wexler on your debut into the YA genre. The only other thing I could say is how much I am going to hate the wait for book two!!!!!

Ship of Smoke and Steel is a phenomenal Fantasy/YA hybrid, and one of my favorite new series in a while.When Isoka, gang enforcer of the Sixteenth Ward, is caught by the Empire for being a mage adept, she is tasked with stealing a ghost shop named the Soliton in order to save herself and her sister. On board the ship, which no one has ever returned from, nothing is as it seems and danger is everywhere.For me, this mix of story, world building, mystery and character development was near perfect, always hooking me in to the story and giving me the ‘one more chapter’ impulse. On top of that, I really think the world of Soliton could be easily made in to a great ARPG video game ala Monster Hunter and it’s ilk. The detail and description is so vivid throughout the story that I can already picture exactly how something like that would play and it’d be a blast.I loved the world of Soliton, it’s sheer size and the mystery of its inner workings was a constant drive to keep reading, and the resolution to a lot of the questions raised were mostly all enjoyable, but at the very least understandable. I also loved the crabs and monsters that swarmed the various levels of Soliton, each one being crazier and deadlier than the last. I especially loved the methods Isoka and her gang had to come up with to dispatch said monsters. The action in this book is well thought out and very entertaining to read. Basically, it’s pretty much everything I’d want.Every character is fantastic. From our protagonist, Isoka, to her friends and even her on-ship nemesis, The Butcher. They’re all so well written, different, diverse and plain fun. I was genuinely invested in every single character the story presented. The fact that every character had their own goals and agency really helped suck me in to the story and the world.All in all, an outstanding start to a series I couldn’t be more excited about now. It has everything you could want - great characters, deep world building, awesome monster slaying and constant mystery. The ending wraps up most everything, but also very much sets up the next book(s) in this series. I already can’t wait for book 2. Five stars.

About the Author

Kelly Kazek is a journalist, humor columnist and blogger. She is the author of nine other books, including two humor collections. She has won more than 180 state and national press awards and twice served as president of the Alabama Associated Press Media Editors. She lives in Huntsville, Alabama, with her husband, Wil Elrick. They travel Alabama's backroads together, seeking out quirky history, and have coauthored two books.Wil Elrick hails from Guntersville in the northeastern part of Alabama. He is a writer and "weirdologist" who loves telling stories, whether as a tour guide to historic Huntsville or with friends around a campfire. He can often be found "off the beaten path" researching historical, weird or unusual tales. He lives in Huntsville, Alabama, with his wife, Kelly Kazek, with whom he has coauthored two books.
